Lev Mikhailovich Zhiltsov (Russian: Жильцо́в Лев Миха́йлович) (1928–1996) was a Soviet Navy submarine commander and Admiral of the Cold War
Zhiltsov joined a Naval school in 1942 and joined the navy on graduation in 1945. in 1949 he completed the Caspian Naval College and became an officer on the submarine M113 of the Black Sea Fleet. In 1951 Zhiltsov went to the Leningrad Naval College where he graduated with distinction in 1952. In 1954 he was assigned as second in command to the first Soviet nuclear submarine. In 1959 he was awarded the Order of Lenin and given command of the submarine Leninsky Komsomol. In 1962 he took his submarine to the North Pole. Zhiltsov was awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union for this exploit. Subsequently he became commander of the Baltic Fleet submarine division. In 1975 he was promoted to rear Admiral and served as inspector of new ships for the navy.
Zhiltsov retired in 1987 and died in 1996.
